Breaking News: Reading & Spelling Depend on Language!
Limited Capacity filling up

The most prevalent misunderstanding in literacy instruction is that it is primarily a visual skill. This session will examine the practices emanating from a "visual" approach. It will contrast them with instruction informed by knowledge of language and its central role in learning to read and write.

10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention
Limited Capacity seats available

Many schools are somewhere in the process of implementing MTSS/RTI. Regardless of how long, there are many K-8 schools not getting the full benefit from their efforts and therefore they aren't experiencing the acceleration of student reading scores possible from MTSS. Come hear about the 10 most important factors present in schools that are getting results from their literacy MTSS. Dr. Hall is the author of two books on RTI published by Corwin plus five other publications on data-differentiated literacy instruction, and her newest book is 10 Success Factors for Literacy Interventions (ASCD). She can be reached at shall@95percentgroup.com or on twitter at @susanhall_Edd.

Syntax Matters: Developing Sentence Skills in Students of All Ages
Limited Capacity seats available

More often than not, students struggle at the sentence level far more than they struggle at the paragraph level; teachers ignore this fact if they move directly to practicing prompts for assessments. This workshop focuses on parts of speech and sentence parts as they apply to the act of writing. Participants learn about the components of a good lesson and strategies for developing sentence sense in student writers. They examine parts of speech as a method of understanding the way words interact with each other and sentence parts as building blocks for creating different kinds of sentences. They practice with the elements introduced and model the strategies suggested.

The Power of Reading Profiles
Limited Capacity seats available

This session provides an overview of three common poor reader profiles and their value to teachers in helping struggling readers. Although every poor reader has certain individual needs, three common profiles tend to recur among children with reading problems: specific word recognition difficulties, specific comprehension difficulties, and mixed reading difficulties. An understanding of these common profiles provides a powerful starting point for teachers in interpreting assessments and planning reading interventions across the K-12 grade span. In addition to their value in reading, profiles can potentially inform writing and math intervention for poor readers who have related problems in these areas. Moreover, profile information is useful not only for students with disabilities that affect reading (e.g., dyslexia or autism), but also for children with more experientially based reading difficulties (e.g., English learners). Profile information can be especially valuable when implemented in the context of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) or a response to intervention (RTI) approach. To illustrate these points, the session includes a discussion of the interdisciplinary research base for reading profiles and provides multiple case examples.

During this session, participants will explore the Fusion Reading program, discuss implementation ideas, and discuss the evidence supporting the program. Fusion Reading (FR) is designed to re-engage students in the reading process and support student development of foundational reading skills required for success in academic and career endeavors. The program includes components on motivation and engagement, classroom management, word-level reading skills, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Most importantly, Fusion Reading supports instruction in the integration of all reading component skills and their generalization to core class content. FR is an evidence-based program for middle and high school students who have been minimally responsive to previous reading instruction. Morphology Matters: Developing Vocabulary Through Bases & Affixes
Limited Capacity seats available

All too soon students are introduced to textbooks filled with longer, multisyllabic words. Even with effective basic phonics instruction, readers are often unable to handle both the increased quantity of text and its complexity. An understanding of morphology, or the meaning parts that comprise words, is valuable for the development of vocabulary and word attack skills. In this interactive, hands-on workshop, Van Cleave engages participants in a brief overview of the research, an introduction to morphemic awareness, and then a study of advanced word decoding strategies. Participants practice with each concept and learn tools useful for helping students understand, decode, and spell unfamiliar words.
