Elementary grades provide the perfect opportunity to connect the engineering design process with the development of essential foundational learning components needed for engagement in computer science. Using the Engineering is Elementary Unit, An Alarming Idea: Designing Alarm Circuits, participants will experience a unique and engaging engineering design challenge while exploring the close correlation between the essential skills needed in engineering design and in computer science. Curricular connections such as team collaboration and support, problem-solving strategy development, and the use of sequencing to decompose complex problems will be examined. Implementation strategies will be shared that integrate the engineering design process with computer science-related ideas that build the foundation for more specific concepts and practices in later grades.
