This session will outline the design of the Mindplay Literacy program and how it might supplement the R.I.S.E. initiative for school-wide applications, from its comprehensive Universal Screener through blended Virtual Reading Coach and Reading Fluency components, providing appropriate student assignment for both interventions and ongoing reading improvement for ALL students, helping to ensure grade-level proficiency by end of 3rd grade and beyond through secondary levels. The session will emphasize the pedagogical basis of the program on the foundational research as defined by the “Science of Reading”, from its earliest development in utilizing the Orton-Gillingham methodology for reading instruction through highly qualified reading instructors and speech pathologists. Information also will include the professional development options, providing an alternate pathway through the separate Comprehensive Reading Course (35-40 hours), administered through the Stern Center for Language and Learning, and the internal MVRC Teacher Companion (8 hours), both designed and delivered by Dr. Nancy Mather and her colleagues, offering certification credits for training on Science of Reading Instruction. Our session will conclude with information on recently completed research from the University of Cincinnati, qualifying for ESSA compliance and, combined with prior research, the final document for approval on What Works Clearinghouse.
