The ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words is a foundation of reading success. Research has supported the progression model that children’s phonological awareness skills develop from larger units, such as syllables, to smaller units, such as phonemes. During this session, we'll provide an overview of 95 Percent Group’s phonological awareness approach by introducing our
Phonological Awareness Screener for Intervention™ (PASI) and
Phonological Awareness Lessons.
The diagnostic assessment and the lessons are aligned to a systematic skill continuum to pinpoint deficits, deliver targeted intervention instruction, and provide progress monitoring that guides instructional practices.
Participants will:
- Learn more using a Phonological Awareness continuum of skills, from simple to complex, to assess students and deliver targeted intervention instruction
- Identify the need and discuss the purpose of using a phonological awareness diagnostic screener
- Review the importance of phonological awareness in reading instruction by viewing and modeling strategies with other attendees
- Learn how to scaffold a student’s phonological awareness and the components of an explicit phonological awareness intervention lesson
- Discuss the critical need to assess advanced phonemic awareness skills to master phoneme substitution
Workshop materials:
Participants will receive a
Phonological Awareness Screener for Intervention™ sample, a
Phonological Awareness Lessons sample lesson with manipulatives to use with their students and a complimentary
Phoneme Substitution Screener for use with older students.
